There was a larger country
before the ocean ruled.
It began at dusk, bubbling
like soup, rising to a rage
faster than any previous anger.
Water overcoming everyone
in their sleep, killing all
with a heart. There never was
a death count. Just one baby’s
bottle floating, empty,
as a reminder of dry land.
